Farallon Institute seeks to hire a new postdoctoral researcher
Position Description
The Farallon Institute in Petaluma, California (http://faralloninstitute.org) seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to support NASA's Multi-sensor Improved Sea Surface Temperature (MISST) program: Arctic Ocean. MISST is a continuing program that aims to provide and improve SST data by integrating and validating satellite data with other platforms, including shipboard observations, buoys, and autonomous vehicles. In the current chapter, MISST is focused on the Arctic region (see AGU-EOS article). The postdoctoral scientist will lead research on processes that impact SST variability by integrating satellite and newly-collected Saildrone data. Farallon Institute is a non-profit interdisciplinary oceanographic research institute that works on climate, physical, and biological oceanography. This position will be located in Petaluma, California.
General Duties
The MISST project focuses on SST variability in response to diurnal warming, air-sea-ice interactions, and in the changing marginal ice zone. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct retrievals of satellite and Saildrone SST for the Arctic, assess the accuracy of measurements, develop and test research questions concerning drivers of SST variability. The Postdoctoral researcher will be expected to work independently and lead manuscript preparation and publication of results. The Postdoctoral Researcher will also be responsible for reporting to funding agencies, and possibly grant preparation and project outreach to the general public depending on project needs.
Qualifications
The candidate must possess a Ph.D. in Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Sciences, or a closely related field, with demonstrated expertise using satellite data and Python programming. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently, but as part of an interdisciplinary team. Previous experience working with large datasets, including knowledge of large data file systems (HDF, ZARR, NetCDF, etc.) is a plus.
The expected start date of the position is January 1, 2022. To apply, send a cover letter highlighting research accomplishments and interests, a CV, and contacts of three references to marisolgr@faralloninstitute.org, by November 1, 2021. Please put “Postdoctoral Researcher – MISST” in the subject line.
